Ermogene Miraglia was born in a neighborhood of Naplesancient, from Luigi Miraglia, doctor, and from Teresa Costarelli, musician and virtuoso of the mandolin. Hermogenes is the first of six children. At the age of thirteen he lost his mother. The father raised his six children, with the help of two unmarried sisters, to the point of leading them all to graduation. Ermogene Miraglia became a doctor of agricultural science at the University of Portici. Immediately after graduation he won two competitions, one as a railway inspector and one as a school principal. At the age of twenty-four he met Maria Tarantino, who soon became his wife and gave him two children. The wife was the artist's favorite model, until old age. The artist was active in the Second World War as an officer and was seriously injured during a bombing. Since he was a child he showed remarkable powers of observation and a strong sense of form and color. The painter was self-taught (although he was later awarded the title of honorary academy by the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples , but he was strongly influenced by the magic of French Impressionism and the influence of the painters Antonio Mancini and Vincenzo Irolli. The artist scored remarkable successes in various exhibitions in Italy and abroad and his signature is included in the Comanducci.
