She was born in the family of the bank servant Adolf Jirásek (1864– ??) and his wife Kateřina, nee Martínková (1865– ??). [1] She had an older brother, Adolf, a later doctor. The family lived first in Královské Vinohrady and in 1912 moved to Bubeneč . [2]
Marta Jirásková attended the Letná Lyceum, where Julie Mezerová taught drawing . She modeled portraits privately with the sculptor Ladislav Beneš. In 1916 they were admitted to the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague to the sculpture class of prof. Drahoňovského . (During the war, most of the men served in the army and the school accepted women who were interested in sculpture. The Academy refused women until 1919) [3] .
In 1919 she was also a student of Otakar Spaniel and in 1921 she was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of Jan Štursa . Together with Mary Duras, they were the first women to study sculpture at the Academy.
From 1921 to 1923 she traveled to Germany, Vienna and Italy.
She graduated in 1923 and went to Paris the following year. She attended museums and galleries, drew an evening act at Grande Chaumiére School, went to proofreading for Emile Bourdell, and gave lectures by František Kupka . In 1925 and 1931 she stayed in Paris again thanks to a scholarship from the Ministry of Education.
